Sansevierias, also known as Snake Plants or Mother-in-law's Tongue, have a rich history of folklore and modern science. These plants have been cultivated for centuries, with a particularly treasured status in China. Legend has it that the Eight Gods bestowed their virtues upon those who grew these plants, including long life, prosperity, intelligence, beauty, art, poetry, health, and strength.

Traditionally, Sansevierias were kept near the entrances of homes in China to allow the virtues to flow through, in a practice predating Feng Shui. They were also commonly found in upscale restaurants, herbalists' shops, doctor's offices, and other important establishments. The popularity of Sansevierias in China predates even the Good Luck Bamboo (Chinese ti plant or Dracaena spp.).

Known as dragons for their unique qualities, Sansevierias are believed to draw strength from within, with reports of them splitting large earthen pots as they grow. In China, these plants are often potted within ornate ceramic pots featuring dragons and phoenixes, further enhancing their mystical allure.

NASA has even conducted research on the air-purifying properties of Sansevierias, among other plants, as a means of combating "Sick Building Syndrome." Growing a Snake Plant is simple, as it can thrive in both bright light and low-light environments, requiring only occasional watering when the soil is dry.
